Carey Mulligan has been wowing us with her grown-out boy cut on the premiere circuit for Wall Street and Never Let me Go. She’s been wearing the choppy crop with a lot of texture, but at last night’s BAFTA Britannia Awards in L.A., she worked some hot-styling magic for an ultra-sleek, side-parted coif. It’s amazing what a good blow-out can do. Which do you prefer: wild and wavy or straight and narrow?

Marie Robinson has pretty much cemented her position as one of the city’s top colorists. She got her start as an apprentice at Pierre Michel at the age of 19 and put in stints at Danilo, John Frieda (where she became famously adept at balayage highlighting), and Bumble and Bumble, before spending seven years as the head colorist at Sally Hershberger Downtown. Last spring, Robinson sent shockwaves through the beauty community when she abandoned the queen of the $800 cut to open her own eponymous salon with a chunk of the staff following suit. Besides having her own fancy new Fifth Avenue flagship, Robinson also has an impressive celebrity client roster (Liv Tyler, Natalie Portman, Rachel McAdams, and Anne Hathaway all trust their tresses to Robinson, and Kristen Stewart went strawberry blond at her suggestion this summer). She also recently added an enviable title to her CV: color director for Clairol (that’s her in the brand’s latest round of TV ads). Despite these achievements, Robinson remains refreshingly (make that shockingly) down-to-earth, which, along with those legendary highlighting abilities, makes her very easy to love. Here, she divulges who cuts and colors her own platinum blond crop, along with her favorite beauty destinations and must-haves.

AN image of Buckingham Palace was projected on to the exterior of what is to become the future American Embassy in Wandsworth on Saturday night for Grey Goose Character and Cocktails: the Elton John Aids Foundation Winter Ball, curated by Jean Paul Gaultier – where Erin O’Connor, Gemma Arterton, Daisy Lowe, Liz Hurley, Roisin Murphy and Tamara Ecclestone were some of the night’s famous faces.
The French flag flew above the spectral palace and a Tricolor carpet that lead from the muddy car park were the first hint at the liberal Gallic touches that were to come from Gaultier’s party planning . Inside – past two saluting girls in thigh-high latex boots and faux bear skin hats – guests passed under a Art Deco cut-out spelling “L’Amour” before entering JPG’s party vision. Red and green lasers cut through the darkness as handsome waiters served an array of pre-dinner Grey Goose cocktails.

“Allo, allo, allo,” began Gaultier when he took to the stage. “I should like to say how happy I am to be here tonight to participate with the [Elton John AIDS] Foundation. It is very beautiful what you are doing for all those people. Tonight was a great experience because I could use a little French revenge of the frog to arrive with the French flag over Buckingham Palace.”

It turned out that the heavily French-accented voice that comically announced: “Jean Paul Gaultier, the French Frog, is inviting you to eat – so stand up and go”, was the designer himself. So we went – as we were told – through to the dining room, which was lit by twinkling crystal chandeliers, (which ranged in size from huge to completely gigantic), where chef Marcus Wareing was in charge of dinner.

The after-dinner charity auction saw a vintage dress from Lily Allen’s Lucy in Disguise vintage shop – modeled by Gemma Arterton – raise £8,000 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, while the cocktail bar designed by Gaultier went for £80,000.

Sir Elton performed a selection of his greatest hits – replacing an unwell Lily Allen – and got everyone up and dancing before Roisin Murphy played DJ for the after party.

SUPERMODEL Kate Moss is used to launch parties, but last night at Topshop she was honoured with a farewell party as she unveiled her final Topshop collection.

Moss arrived with Sir Philip Green and his daughter Chloe and officially opened the event at 7pm, allowing customers to begin snapping up her final designs. The red poppy and panther claw dresses from her Iconic collection proved popular, as did the black embroidered kimono and the crochet lace dress from her autumn/winter collection. While the shopping frenzy continued, a mini Kate Moss retrospective was held in the basement of the store, displaying her past creations for Topshop as well as her campaign imagery.

Moss wore a bespoke black Lurex jumpsuit, created by Topshop for the occasion, which one lucky fan will win.
